Riding in the car is a
favorite activity for many dogs. Dogs usually love the vibration from the car,
and feeling the wind out the window. It can also be fun for dog owners. It’s
great to see your dog so happy, and that in turn, makes you happy. However, when
riding with your dog, there are some steps you should take to ensure safety for
both you and your dog.
Some cars are able to support
some type of gate or net being installed in the back of your car. This is very
important! Research this and find out if your car supports this. However, even
if you have a regular car, there are special seat belts for your dog. Yes, I
know it may cost some money. But I’m sure you care about your dog’s safety. What
if you had to suddenly stop and your dog went flying forward? Not a pretty
picture. You love your dog as much as any member of your family, so you should
provide the same safety for your dog. In addition, what if your dog decides to
climb in the front seat and distract you? Seriously, just get some type of gate
or seatbelt. It will make your drive a lot safer for both you and your dog.
If you have a pickup truck,
you shouldn't let your dogs ride in the pickup bed. Yes, it’s temping. Yes, a
lot of people do this. I still don't recommend it though. This can create very
dangerous situations if your dog decided to jump out or just happened to fall
out. Also, if you suddenly have to stop, the dog may go flying. Tying the dog
in the pickup bed probably isn't a good idea either. The dog can still jump or
fall out and may just end up being choked or dragged along the road. That
wouldn't be good. That is why the dog should ride inside the car with you, but
with some type of gate or seat belt.
Also, never leave the dog
locked in the car with the windows rolled up during the summer! It can become
so hot inside the car. In fact, it’s fairly common for some cars to reach over 120F inside the car. You hear all types of stories of
babies who died from heat exhaustion after their parents left them inside a
heated car. This can happen to your dog too! So if you need to leave the
vehicle and the dog can't come with you, it is probably best to just take the
trip without your dog. Yes, it's sad to disappoint your dog like that. But like with all of these tips, better safe then sorry!
